One Ninety Six

Students from the Fall 2017 course, ART 196U, Introduction to Curatorial Studies, collaborated to create an exhibition that features an eclectic selection of artwork from the Sacramento State, Art Department Art Collection. Artist Statement

196 is a student curated-exhibition of selected artworks from the Sacramento State Art Department Art Collection. 196 is a brief title derived from the course, ART 196U, Introduction to Curatorial Studies from the Fall 2017 semester. Each ART 196 student selected a piece from the collection to use as the point of focus for study and research, which culminated in writing an essay and inclusion in this exhibition.

The Sacramento State Art Department Art Collection consists of over 400 works of art, including work by emeritus faculty, past students, alumni, and well-known artists. A significant use of the collection is to make it available for student study, research, and for students to actively engage with the artwork. ART 196U students examined the artworks, studied their preferred piece and wrote an essay that chronicled the historical significance of the artwork and the artist.

196 is the showcase for the students individual and combined efforts.
