Artist Statement

This body of work is part of an ongoing series exploring what it means to nurture and be nurtured. We come into this world dependent, requiring others to provide and care for us. As we grow, we surround ourselves with people and things that feed our souls as well as our bodies. In return, we nurture those around us by being present, listening, and actively participating in life with them. I believe no single person or thing can completely meet our need to be nurtured to the depths we were created to experience, but doing what we love, reaching out to others to share our joys and our knowledge, expressing our feelings with words and images can get us close.

As a native of California, I’m inspired and nurtured by her beauty. I grew up in Yolo County and the colors of the land, water, and sky here inform my palette. The play and tension that can occur within an abstract painting keep me painting, the endless possibilities inviting me back to the canvas time and again. Each painting becomes a meditation, and a question to be answered.

Teaching others, sharing knowledge and techniques that allow them to create artwork that is authentic and fulfilling to them is my passion. I have been teaching art for over a decade and am inspired by watching my students explore and discover the artist waiting within.
