Super Powers of the Illustrated Line

Some say, “a drawing is simply a line going for a walk.” This exhibition is an exploration of how the “illustrated line” can transform into powerful images through hybrid technology. Work by Jonathan Weast.

Artist Statement

Super Powers of the Illustrated Line is an exhibition showcasing how simple hand-drawn lines can be transformed into powerful images that give a new look into the world of superheroes. Professor Jonathan Weast combines analog (black colored-pencil drawings) with digital (Photoshop generated colored paintings and Motionleap Lightricks for animation and/or moving elements), breathing life into familiar comic book characters.
As an instructor in the Department of Design at CSU Sacramento, his passion is to understand how we see and communicate... and how that translates in both the academic and commercial world. As an illustrator, he has over 30 years of award-winning images to his credit from The Society of Illustrators, Pastel Society of the West Coast, Communication Arts magazine, and the Sacramento Ad Club. His inspiration for the illustrated line comes from old-world Masters (such as Albrecht Dürer, Edmund DuLac, Howard Pyle, and Arthur Rackham) to more modern illustrators (like Jack Kirby, Frank Frazetta, Alex Ross, and Jim Lee.)
This exhibit offers a peek into the behind-the-scenes process. On the large-screen computer monitor, you can observe time-lapse videos of the analog drawings being generated as well as the final digital animations. On the walls are displays of both final black & white and color Giclée canvas prints.
