Artist Statement
The Pits is a collection of paintings by Liz Stohlman that explore the lonely side of change. Stohlman uses the dwindling industry of coal mining as a symbol of something on the cusp of the end of an era, which she corresponds to the ending of her own youth. Using solemn images of “pit ponies”, a term for mining horses, mules, and ponies in the mid 18th to mid 20th century, the work explores the loneliness that both changes and endings can have.
